If Our Band Could Be Your Life is the bible for American indie and punk rock, then Wednesday night at TT the Bear's was a genuine second coming. After all, the Michael Azerrad-penned book was based on a lyric written by Mike Watt when he was in the seminal oddball-punk trio the Minutemen. As Watt stopped in town for the "Prac'n the 3rd Opera" tour, it was something akin to Jesus being in the building; lifelong punks with greying hair and Black Flag t-shirts anxiously waited in TTs for the man himself to appear, counting down the seconds to the Watt's first local solo gig in years by trying to act normal and not draw attention Mission of Burma's Roger Miller standing in the corner, or by simply watching the opening bands.

"Remembering Jeanne Connolly - A Celebration" TT the Bear's Place, 10 Brookline St, Cambridge Sunday, May 3, 2pm FREE / 21+ Whether you feel like indoor or outdoor fun on Sunday, Cambridge has plenty of free music to offer. A variety of performers play down the street for the crowds at Harvard Square Mayfair with little fear of fiery manholes. Harvard alumni-turned-popsters Chester French are the headliners, and every other band is better in this Bostonist's opinion. At the same time, there's this special free show where so many incredible people are doing short acoustic sets. TT the Bear's Place deserves kudos for occasionally hosting free shows throughout the year, but tomorrow everyone is playing in tribute to Jeanne, a longtime TT's employee who died from cancer in February who meant so much more to so many.
College is a place that is romanticized as the best of one's formative years, where interests in academia blooms, life-long friendships are formed, and one's musical tastes can blossom to dizzying heights. It's fitting, then, that Baltimore's Ponytail will be headlining Boston College radio station WZBC's Spring Concert at T.T. the Bear's tonight. Not only does Ponytail make the kind of dizzying experimental-art-punk-rawk that's bursts to the tops of skyscrapers and boils over with intense energy, but the quartet happened to meet while students at the Maryland Institute College of Art. In fact, the band formed as part of a project for a course taught by professor Jeremy Sigler called Parapainting; every member of the class was told to form a band and perform at the end of the semester. It's thanks to Sigler that one of Baltimore's best and brightest bands exists today.
The other side of TT the Bear’s saw a transformation to times past Monday night, as four folk acts took the stage and captured hearts.
Comedian Rob Cantrell, a popular finalist on two seasons of NBC's "Last Comic Standing", is the ringmaster of "Rob Cantrell's Electric Study Break" at T.T. the Bears on Wednesday night, December 10th, starting at 9pm. "Electric Study Break" is going to be a fun and innovative combination of stand-up comedy, short films, and hoppin' DJ sets. The fact that this is being held at a rock club instead of a comedy club means that for $8 you get a lot of entertainment without a high door fee and a two drink minimum.
Consistency is an underrated virtue in these challenging and changing times. Just as you can count on the stock market to recklessly bounce up and down like a fat kid on a trampoline, for years Boston has been able to count on the reliable Emergency Music to deliver the goods for the able ear. Delegates of pop perfection, old Emergency will headline an increasingly rare appearance this Saturday at T.T. the Bears. Bostonist caught up with singer and LOST devotee Jesse Duquette while sharing a couch during last Thursday’s spell binding episode. Naturally, the two subjects transgressed into one another.
Theater lovers! A rare treat - Part I *and* Part II of Tony Kushner's seminal modern epic "Angels in America" is in town and it runs until Feb. 10. It's about the painful disintegration of two relationships against a backdrop of greed, conservatism, and the discovery of AIDS. Presented by Boston Theatre Works.
--The Dresden Dolls will be at the Orpheum. Meow Meow, whom Bostonist had the pleasure at seeing at Sxip's Hour of Charm, will open. It's hard to explain what Meow Meow does exactly, but she is on a mission of seduction. 7:30 pm.
--Tracy Morgan is in town. Watch the Track Girls the next day because something crazy is bound to happen. And if you see any Tracy-Morgan-related wildness, send a tip! Even the Comedy Connection felt pressed to issue a warning: "This stand-up show contains very sexually explicit material and the strongest language imaginable. This show is for mature audiences only." He'll be at the Comedy Connection at Faneuil Hall tonight and tomorrow night. Shows at 8:00 pm and 10:15 pm on Friday and shows at 7:00 pm, 9:00 pm, and 11:15 pm on Saturday. More info from the Comedy Connection.
The point of the holidays is to give as much as you receive, and tonight's chosen events (plus one announcement) have the giving spirit in mind.
When Bostonist entered Buckaroo's Mercantile, a pop-culture store across the street from T.T. the Bear's and the Middle East in Central Square, stocking stuffers were on our mind. The owner of Buckaroo's Mercantile, Brooks, layers retro images over metal wallets, night lites, light-switch plate covers, and more.

This week the music world turns its gaze to the party they call SXSW. A number of local bands are hitting the scene in hopes that it will propel them to some worldwide tour – or at least help them get out of that "garden level" apartment in Medford. While some eyes turn south to Texas where an immigration debate runs wild the US immigration policy has taken a toll on the local concert...

There was a time and a place when Bostonist kept missing upcoming shows in the area because we were too busy to pay attention. Along came Tourfilter. A locally based website (now with worldwide reach) that allows us to take a look at upcoming shows based on the information provided by the venue. Each and every day they let us know who's coming to town, where they'll be, and which of our friends are tracking the bands. Recommendations, suggestions, and tracking hits help find out what might be this week's hit that we've never heard of before. Suggestions, of course, are always welcome – and since we first reported on them significant changes have been made to improve the site for the better.
