The Red Sox late season downward spiral continued in New York last night as they were soundly beaten by a 9-1 score. The Sox lead in the Wild Card race is down to 1.5 games after Tampa Bay beat Toronto, 6-2. The Sox play two games tomorrow. Can't wait! Bostonist is, however, looking forward to seeing what Tom Brady will do next after two memorable performances that earned him back-to-back player of the week honors. Buffalo is 2-0 and Bill Belichick is downplaying the Patriots 15-game winning streak against the Bills. "That doesn't really mean anything," he said. Thanks, coach.

These days, going to law school seems like a very bad idea. Everyone from the LA Times to the NY Times has pointed out a fact that has not escaped dozens of bloggers, many of whom are themselves unemployed lawyers. There aren't many law jobs out there these days, there are already too many lawyers, and graduates from low-ranked schools have little hope of ever recouping the tens of thousands of dollars in debt that they have accrued.
Despite Deval Patrick's criticism, it looks like former United Freedom Front member Ray Luc Levasseur will speak on campus at UMass Amherst during this Thursday's Colloquium on Social Change. The United Freedom Front, described as a terrorist organization, was responsible for a number of bombings in the Northeast in the late 1970s and early 1980s, perhaps most notably the 1976 Suffolk County Courthouse bombing in Boston that injured 22 individuals, even costing one courthouse employee his leg. The UFF used bombings and robberies as tactics to fight political conditions they disapproved of, including apartheid in South Africa and U.S. policy in Central America. Levasseur is scheduled to speak at UMass regarding his 1989 trial in Springfield for seditious conspiracy. This, the longest criminal trial in Massachusetts history, eventually found Levasseur and his co-defendants not guilty. Thursday's appearance, if it goes on, would be Levasseur's first public appearance in the area since his imprisonment.
The last time we heard something from Tina Brown's Daily Beast, it was the dubious claim that sweet little Emerson "Whiteytown" College is the most dangerous school in the country. So we're taking the publication's latest news with a grain of salt... and a side of fries.
With the Red Sox in the insignificant final series of 2009, the most interesting topic today for Bostonist is, you guessed it, the notoriously enigmatic Patriots injury report! Jerod Mayo and Vince Wilfork generated a lot of interest as Bill Belichick listed them as "doubtful" and "questionable," respectively.
It was a terrific night of hockey at the TD Banknorth Garden on Friday as 4 area teams took the ice for the Hockey East semi-finals. UMASS Lowell squared off against Northeastern in game 1, and Boston College took on Boston University for the second game. The players were clearly excited to play in front of the big crowds at the Garden, and the fans were loud and proud and did not disappoint.
UMass-Amherst is lamenting the presence of that pesky "-Amherst" in its name. As Massachusetts' preeminent state school attempts to grow in prestige, the university feels the qualifier takes away from its importance. Having lived in places where Wisconsin and Texas mean only one thing when it comes to higher ed, this Bostonist can understand this dilemma. The UMass alumni association has a catchy slogan--"You were. You are. UMASS."--but we think that a pair of prestigious alumni have offered an even better solution in the form of a certain song. Still, we won't exactly be surprised if the university doesn't start singing that tune.
David Ortiz is back! That guy who went to Japan, kind of looked like Papi, swung with a handicap, and made lots of outs was replaced by the confident slugger we all know and love. The real Papi singled in the fifth for his first hit of the year, then put the Sox on the board with a 2-run homer in the seventh.
Jonathan Papelbon shouldn't be allowed access to big game balls once the final out has been recorded. It's one thing when a dog eats the ball that won the 2007 World Series for Boston, but when word spread this morning that another sentimental game ball likely fell victim to our closer? Paps, it's time to have a little chat about what a keepsake is.
Movie mogul Samuel Goldwyn once famously said of preachy movies, "If you want to send a message, call Western Union.". Well, Western Union is now out of the telegram business, so the Celtics had to send a message to Detroit some other way, playing stifling defense, fundamental offense, and grinding out a win that - well, that sends the message - that they just might actually be the best team in the East.
More reason for cash-starved college students, especially those in the UMass system, to cultivate the taste for ramen. WBZ reports, "The university's trustees finance panel approved a 3.1 percent increase in fees Wednesday."
