Universities in Massachusetts are making news.
The Boston Globe recently described University of Massachusetts-Amherst as a place stuck between what it is and what it wants to be. Resources are limited, facilities are lacking, and home grown students are going to exotic places like Connecticut for the education the Amherst campus can't provide.
According to the Boston Globe, UMass Amherst wants to become a "public Ivy" along with institutions like Michigan, Virginia, and Cal-Berkely. If you are Robert Holub, chancellor of the Amherst campus, the news that the new academic year begins with an attempt to make the largest sushi roll - 400 feet long - in the world can't be a good sign.

UMass-Amherst is lamenting the presence of that pesky "-Amherst" in its name. As Massachusetts' preeminent state school attempts to grow in prestige, the university feels the qualifier takes away from its importance. Having lived in places where Wisconsin and Texas mean only one thing when it comes to higher ed, this Bostonist can understand this dilemma. The UMass alumni association has a catchy slogan--"You were. You are. UMASS."--but we think that a pair of prestigious alumni have offered an even better solution in the form of a certain song. Still, we won't exactly be surprised if the university doesn't start singing that tune.

The four boys, three 17 year-olds and one 18 year-old, were arraigned Tuesday on charges of aggravated rape. The alleged victim reported the incident to police Saturday morning. [Globe; Herald]
The spring semester is just underway. The student population has brought back an influx of students into Boston and across the Commonwealth. But a student, Brian Marquis, at UMass Amherst won't let the fall semester go. He's holding on and disputing a grade he received. He's exchanged the emails with the TA, talked to various higher-ups in the department, and taken it to the next step. He's filed grievance in the courts – fifteen counts...
While we don’t long for the days of having a required summer reading list, Bostonist has been feeling a bit inspired to pick up a book and actually start reading something not on a computer screen. Since we’re going to be “vacationing” in the city this year, we might as well read some books that are set here in our fair state. Here are some of our Bostonist staff picks for your reading enjoyment. History...
After a weekend of green, beer, and basketball, Bostonist is drained. It all started for us 10 years ago when our Western Mass. roots were honored as UMass Amherst team went to the Final Four with Coach Cal. and Marcus Camby (who later cost the Final Four standing for “improper gifts” – jewelry and prostitutes). Since then we’ve faithfully filed out our brackets each season. Sometimes we pick the underdogs for an upset and sometimes we glean knowledge from those who have followed entire season. We usually only catch a dozen or so games before the Madness begins. This year seems to be a particularly bad year for our bracket. It’s not any consolation that Dick Vitale is sitting in our boat for the Final Four selections.
