    It turns out that the Massachusetts Bureau of Labor Statistics's comparatively rosy unemployment estimates were off somewhat, as the state's unemployment rate rose to 9.5% in January. The state had estimated a rate of 9.3%, which is only rosy if you like the kind of black, dead roses that you give to people as a curse. As this recently laid off Bostonist can attest, it was hard out there in January, for pimps and internet content managers alike. The "good" news?     Unemployment has hit 6.9% in the state last month, the highest it's been in 15 years but still lower than the national average of 7.2%. Education and health services jobs constituted a somewhat bright (or at least less dim) spot, growing by 1.5% last year according to the Executive Office of Workforce Development.
