- Mass. General Hospital has raised $1 billion in a fundraising campaign needed to complete expansion already underway. They need a total of $1.5 billion by 2013. [WHDH]

Eric Rosengren, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, expects the unemployment rate to remain high through 2010. He called for “unconventional monetary policy” to help the economy.
- Beaches in Hingham, Hull, Cohasset, and Marshfield are closed to swimming Thursday after tests found high bacteria levels. The affected beaches include Seal Cove in Hingham, James Avenue in Hull, Bassing's Beach at the Sailing Club in Cohasset and the sampling point in the Fieldston section of Marshfield. It turns out that the Massachusetts Bureau of Labor Statistics's comparatively rosy unemployment estimates were off somewhat, as the state's unemployment rate rose to 9.5% in January. The state had estimated a rate of 9.3%, which is only rosy if you like the kind of black, dead roses that you give to people as a curse. As this recently laid off Bostonist can attest, it was hard out there in January, for pimps and internet content managers alike. The "good" news? The national unemployment rate is still two points higher, at 9.7%. [Globe]
A $600 million budget gap could lead to trimming 2,000 state jobs, not to mention other cost-cutting measures. [Boston Globe]...The Mass. unemployment rate jumped to 9.2% in September, which might mean the Bay State is still in a recession. Unemployment has hit 6.9% in the state last month, the highest it's been in 15 years but still lower than the national average of 7.2%. Education and health services jobs constituted a somewhat bright (or at least less dim) spot, growing by 1.5% last year according to the Executive Office of Workforce Development. Most other sectors were down for the year, with notable declines in Trade, Transportation and Utilities as well as Construction.
