Dear Ask Bostonist, I have two out-of-town friends (NYC and DC) who are visiting me next weekend. They are all excited about being in Boston for St. Patrick's Day, but every time I venture out of the 17th in Boston, I don't seem to have a good time...very long lines, cheesy bars (Purple Shamrock, anyone?), or just a skeleton crew is left. Any suggestions where I can take them on St. Patty's Day after work?... more ›

Bostonist first came across Jodi Picoult’s book The Pact on a bus ride home from New York City; after four hours on the Greyhound, we were hooked on this tale of two teenagers with love, suicide, and suspense. So like most books we get our hands on, we read it, forget about it and start reading some other author. Picoult’s work came back to us recently when My Sister’s Keeper was selected as our monthly book club’s selection (yes, Bostonist is in a book club…okay we were in one.) This was another suspenseful story of two sisters, one who was conceived in hopes of keeping the other healthy as she fights leukemia. Although it sounds pretty heavy, Picoult is able to keep it lighter than one would expect and extremely realistic and dramatic ("a page turner" if you will). So when we read that Jodi Picoult is in town tonight to promote her latest novel, The Tenth Circle, we were excited for this reading. And like her previous works, this book sounds like another one that we’ll tear through. A man, who has a past of stealing, drinking, and anger, reinvents himself to become a caring father. Yet once he learns of his daughter being date raped, the old him starts to struggle with his new self. more ›

There are quite a few author readings and events going on tonight around the city and there seems to be a bit of something for everyone. So why not Tivo that episode of "The O.C." (Bostonist knows it's one of your guilty pleasures) and introduce some literature into your night. If feminism, comedy, and just blatant, hilarious honesty, is your interest, head over to see Jill Soloway (pictured) in her "Tiny Ladies Extravaganza" at 8p.m.... more ›
