An ongoing contract impasse between WHDH and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) union that represents on-air anchors and reporters could affect the annual Health and Fitness Expo at the Hynes Convention Center in Back Bay, sponsored by WHDH. AFTRA recommended WHDH anchors and reporters not attend the event. The contract dispute focuses on salaries. WHDH's owner, Sunbeam Television of Miami, has faced age discrimination allegations in the past. Remember to follow Bostonist on Twitter and like us on Facebook. more ›

Despite its disturbingly Christian iconography, we like PAX East, the massive video game that we visited twice. But in every bushel of apples, you'll find a few bad ones, and that goes double when that bushel is made up of nerds instead of apples. Being a good nerd means being friendly and contented with your socially outcast lot. Being a bad nerd means stealing video game code. more ›

This weekend, as we know, Boston was host to the first annual PAX East gaming convention, the much-anticipated East Coast followup to the original PAX. The sold-out show brought thousands of game enthusiasts right into the heart of Boston to take over the Hynes Convention Center. The ceremonies kicked off with the roar of the crowd on Friday afternoon, when Wil Wheaton (of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Big Bang Theory fame) delivered an inspiring keynote speech, over which he'd labored extensively. The talk set the tone for a feeling of camaraderie (which sometimes seems in short supply in Boston, outside the drunken revelry of Sox games) that endured for the weekend. Mr. Wheaton's inspiring performance was followed by a few words from PAX creators Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, also known as Tycho and Gabe, from the web comic Penny Arcade. As one attendee put it, nerd is in the air. Last weekend may have brought us Vericon, but this weekend the nerdiness heats up at PAX East! As we said before, if you know what it is, you're probably going; if you don't know, you probably don't care. And it's sold out now, anyway, so you won't be able to go. Alas. more ›

If you didn't get enough of the Dropkick Murphys over St. Patrick's Day (and we freely admit that you may have overdosed), Activision has made a pack for Guitar Hero III so you can play along to the Dropkick Murphys to your hearts content, which we first heard about at HubArts. more ›

If you want to get teenagers to stop doing something, the best plan of action is to tell them it's destructive and then prohibit them from doing it. That's only backfired... just about every time it's ever been tried. more ›

Did the good vibrations work yesterday? Are the Red Sox going to start the second half with the take-no-prisoners attituted that got them through April and May? Well, last night was a good start. With a good performance by Tim Wakefield (pause for palpable sigh of relief) and the Sox' big sluggers looking active again, the Sox cruised to a 7-4 win over Toronto. Maybe "cruised" is overstating it a bit, since the Sox 5-1... more ›

Before we begin, we'd like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family of James Kim. We are not, by any means, trying to discount that tragedy by juxtaposing posts about the Kims with more light-hearted posts. It's the nature of doing a compilation such as this one: we're trying to give a full slice of the goings-on in the Ist-a-Verse: the good, the bad, and the ugly. Londonist wants you to know where to... more ›

Whatever your preference, A Life of Play podcast might be a good place to get some tips and advice on how to best plan your next excursion. more ›
