Last Monday, Bostonist figured we'd seen it all from Tom Brady. But, Brady was at his best again with three touchdown passes and 423 yards in a 35-21 victory over the San Diego Chargers yesterday in Foxboro. Brady is the first quarterback to ever throw for 400+ yards a week after throwing for over 500 yards. He had a quarterback rating of 135.7 against the Chargers.

Boston won the opener by the score of 3-1 despite mustering only three hits. Jacoby Ellsbury belted a three-run home run in the third inning to provide all the support starter Jon Lester needed. Lester (12-6) allowed just - you guessed it - three hits in seven innings. He had eight strikeouts. The Sox lost to the Rays, 6-2, in the second game. The Sox got just three hits, one each from Ellsbury, Jason Varitek, and Jed Lowrie. Ellsbury and Varitek each hit solo home runs.
The Patriots finally know who they will play a week from today in the NFL Playoffs and it's the New York Jets, who beat the Indianapolis Colts, 17-16, on Saturday. Nick Folk's 32-yard field goal was the difference in the game. The Seattle Seahawks scored an even bigger upset Saturday by eliminating the New Orleans Saints 41-36 in the NFC.
With one crucial cog - Kevin Garnett - out of the line-up and, arguably, the NBA's top team, the Spurs, in town, every other leading member of the green crew stepped their game up in a 105-103 victory.
But, the Patriots defense stood tall in Buffalo by forcing seven turnovers in Sunday's 34-3 win, a decision that wrapped up the AFC East title and delivered home-field advantage to the 13-2 squad.
Tom Brady is coming off of another Tom Brady performance - 350 yards, three TDs and the outburst - in Pittsburgh. He's flush with confidence. And now is when Vince Wilfork challenges #12 to compete in a mano-a-mano challenge of speed? Bostonist loves Big Vince, but dude is tugging on Superman's cape.
Whatever the Red Sox gained on Friday, they gave back on Saturday in a maddening 3-2 loss in 10 innings. Now they face almost a must win scenario tonight on national television with John Lackey getting the ball.
Sox drop two to Texas
The Red Sox are two games into the second half of the season and they managed to fall behind in the first inning of each game and never really recovered enough to win either game. Last night, Texas scored twice in the first off of Felix Doubront before adding five more in the fifth in an 8-4 win. Tim Wakefield (3-8) allowed six runs before Boston batted and the Rangers rolled to a 7-2 win on Thursday.
Are you optimistic about the Celtics? Should you be?
Friday's 96-86 win over Philadelphia is the team's third in a row after the debacle against the historically bad New Jersey Nets. Wins are wins even if they come against bad teams like Charlotte, Detroit and Philly. Boston's got a week of winnable games ahead of them until a trip to Cleveland next Sunday.
The Celtics and some recent opponents are optimistic about the team and think they simply need to overcome injuries and gel as a team. Charlotte coach Larry Brown thinks the Celtics are for real. "They’ve had some injuries. They’re just starting to get healthy. So they’re going to be all right," Brown said.
The New England Patriots designated Vince Wilfork as the team's franchise player. The move sets Wilfork's 2010 salary at $7.003 million, a fact that neither Wilfork nor the team seems satisfied with. He wants more money and the team wants the big guy signed long term. The franchise tag may give both sides a chance to get what they want. Wilfork managed to survive on $2.2 million in 2009. [Globe]
The Boston Celtics (35-18) four-game road swing continued with a third consecutive victory on Friday, a 96-76 decision over the Portand Trailblazers. Ray Allen paced the Green with 21 points, 11 coming in the fourth quarter as the home team tried to rally. "Ray is going to get traded tomorrow," Doc Rivers said. "We're going to keep saying it so he can keep playing well."
Despite a promising 16-7 spurt to open the game, Atlanta's brash brand of confident basketball was too much for the Celtics to handle as the Hawks swept their way to a 100-91 win. Atlanta beat the Green three times in January to secure a season series sweep for the first time since 1998-99. Atlanta took over second place in the Eastern Conference with the win.
"We deserved it," said Doc Rivers after the game. When the Celtics have a 16-point lead, and wind up watching the game end on a defensive breakdown, leading to another loss to an Eastern power...it's hard to argue.
Wednesday's Rondolicious win over Miami really was too much to top so the Celtics didn't even try in another Friday loss to Atlanta, 93-85. Coach Doc Rivers said his team had no "spirit" and was "out for a stroll" in the first quarter. He said Atlanta earned the win. "They deserved the game, " he said. "They're the better team."
With the Red Sox in the insignificant final series of 2009, the most interesting topic today for Bostonist is, you guessed it, the notoriously enigmatic Patriots injury report! Jerod Mayo and Vince Wilfork generated a lot of interest as Bill Belichick listed them as "doubtful" and "questionable," respectively.
"I like that on my day, they feel like we should win," said Josh Beckett about his Red Sox teammates. In a summer where nothing's felt certain, it does feel like we can produce the minimum amount of offense and still get a W when Beckett (13-4) pitches.
Why is Derek Jeter making this face? Is it just because the Yankees have now lost all seven games to the Red Sox this year? Is it because first place in the AL East just changed hands? Or is he just going loco after having to stand in the field for long inning after long inning while his pitching staff lets the Sox run around the bases?
It all starts now.
The Bruins and Celtics took a much-deserved day off yesterday, which allowed Boston sports fans and athletes alike an opportunity to make sure their holiday preparations (for those celebrating Christmas) or celebrations (for our Hanukkah-celebrating readers) were well underway. An inadvertent side effect of this day off? We got to know a little more about a man named Todd.
Vincent Wilford was called to the Commissioner's carpet yesterday to answer for a series of controversial plays. Wilfork, still a watched man after his hit on Buffalo's J.P. Losman last season, was asked to New York to explain to the Commish his side of a dicey hit on Denver's Jay Cutler a couple weeks ago. They talked it out, the Commish made Wilfork an offer he couldn't refuse, and the meeting ended with Vince a little poorer and, perhaps, a little wiser. At least he didn't get suspended for this week's Colts game.
Well...that sucked.
--The Herald followed up on the story that New England Patriot Nick Kaczur allegedly turned informant after getting busted with oxy. They stated the obvious--being an informant can put one in a dangerous position. [Boston Herald]
Like Vince Wilfork, Tom Brady proves that when you're a New England Patriot, you can do whatever the hell you want. Unlike Wilfork, Brady isn't overdoing his macho. Instead, the gossip site TMZ spotted him toting a little dog carrier (screengrab from TMZ, head to the site for the full video):
Update: Mike Reiss posted at 3:10 that Wilfork--and his finger--got fined $15,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct. (Thanks, AnneAllsonMA!)
OK, so maybe that 4th Super Bowl is a bit further away than Bostonist originally thought. The Pats were, sad to say, trounced by division rival Miami Dolphins on Sunday, 21-0. This one was ugly folks, from the jump. Alas, Bostonist should have had a bit of a clue that this could be coming, with Tommy's record down in Miami (a place he is under .500, 2-4 career) and the injuries the Pats were...
After what seemed like a 3 month lay-off, the Patriots were back in action Sunday afternoon, this time facing rival Buffalo in up-state New York to kick around the Bills, 28-6. The Patriots showed no signs of rust on Sunday, coming off their bye week, as they took it to the hometown Bills in front of their home crowd right from the starting gun. The Pats jumped out to an early lead by scoring...
