Adrian Tomine, 6pm ($5) Killer of Sheep, 8pm ($12, $10 Brattle members) Brattle Theatre Special $15 ticket gets you into both events! Perhaps best known for his graphic series Optic Nerve, some of which was collected in the book Summer Blonde, artist Adrian Tomine recently came out with a full-length graphic novel called Shortcomings--and even more recently drew a rad cover for the New Yorker (pictured right). The longer novel format gave Tomine more room......

Is it just us, or does it seem like whenever the Bruins have the spotlight to themselves, they lose? When they play the same night as the Celtics, or Patriots, they're fine, but give everyone else the night off, and it feels like we always have to lead with a Bruins loss. Maybe it's just us. But they deserve better. They certainly deserved better last night, as they dropped a 4-3 OT game in Toronto.......

--A massive fire that started in an abandoned nightclub and eventually destroyed 14 buildings in downtown Lawrence broke into the national news. In a miracle given the size of the fire, no one was hurt. However, 30 families were displaced. Authorities think the fire is suspicious. The owner, who was in the process of turning the spot into a restaurant, says he has no insurance and that someone "jealous of his success" started it.......

Hey, wasn't this West Coast trip supposed to demonstrate that the Celtics weren't quite as good as everybody thought? The last hope for the rest of the NBA to stop the Celtics in 2007, the Lakers dug into the history books, coming out in '80s-style short shorts (they ditched them at halftime) to shake things up. They also came out swinging, opening a nasty bloody cut on Kevin Garnett's forehead (KG got called for the......

Hope you sports fans were able to relax yesterday. The disappointing non-slaughter of the Jets is in the rear view mirror, the Dolphins game isn't quite as exciting since the stupid Ravens ended Miami's bid for a winless season, everything is sewn up in the AFC, and the Monday Night game wasn't that exciting. Plus, the Celtics and Bruins were off. But we've got some big games coming up in the next 48 hours, so......

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady visited his child with his ex-girlfriend, Bridget Moynahan, over the bye week. A visitation shouldn't be a huge deal in and of itself, but tabloids, celeb blogs, and the Track Girls fell all over themselves to report the fact that Tom Brady took the time to see his kid, "JET" Moynahan. People Magazine monitored his activities: "With the New England Patriots idle, Brady hung out on both coasts, and found time......

We wondered what happened to Peter Berdovsky and Sean Stevens from the Aqua Teen Hunger Force incident. Berdovsky, also known as "Zebbler," has made lemonade out of the experience. After the Cartoon Network and viral-marketing company Interference, Inc., hung him and Sean Stevens out to dry, Berdovsky made a comeback and has been named one of the top 20 VJs in the world by DJ Magazine. No doubt a little ATHF publicity helped to......

We sure hope Josh Beckett found time during yesterday's off-day to watch High Noon. If you haven't seen it, the plot is that Sheriff Gary Cooper has one day left until retirement, and a pack of mean outlaws are coming to town to wreak havoc. He tries to round up a posse to meet them, but everyone in town has a dentist appointment, or their hair is drying, or they don't roll on Shabbos, or......

Wonder whatever became of the Pats? Well, they missed their target of 38 points, but still comfortably routed the Bengals last night, 34-13. On paper, it looked like the Bengals hung around - it was 10-7 until late in the second quarter - but it never felt like they were any closer than a long arm's length. With Laurence Maroney sidelined due to a groin injury, the spotlight shone on Sammy Morris, who made the......

Well before Mission of Burma's 2002 reunion, rock critics, fans and historians alike had finally acknowledged just how good the Boston scene had it between 1979 and 1983. The post-punk Boston band had enjoyed a loyal, passionate following during its four years reinventing the punk sound, but much of the band's success (critically and commercially) came after the band's active performance years. Cited regularly as an influence for musicians and the watermark band of that......

We hate to throw around the term "must-win" game. Game 4-7 of the 2004 ALCS; now those were must-win games. An August game against a non-divisional foe, when you're winning your own division, shouldn't qualify for the term. But last night sure felt like it. The Sox had dropped two straight to the Angels and the Yankees have been getting closer and closer in the rearview mirror. Furthermore, the Sox were taking the field sans......

Sometimes, we in Boston take our Sox for granted forget how good we've got it. That's why every so often, the Bostonist Sports Department likes to hit the road and investigate the conditions at other ballparks around the land. So we found ourselves in Pittsburgh this weekend, watching the woeful Pirates play the hapless Reds at the sublime PNC Park. We forget just how lucky we are, when we hear mutterings from a Pittsburgh......

It occurred at 7:29 PST on Saturday, after Padres pitcher Clay Hensley unleashed a first-inning fastball with a 2-and-1 count and the resulting shot soared 382 feet to a point beyond left field. And that was that - Hank Aaron was no longer the sole holder of baseball's most hallowed record. Barry Bonds had joined that club by tying the home run record with his 755th blast. Kudos to the Globe's Nick Cardofo, who neatly......

As fans, we can afford to be capricious. That's why the Kevin Garnett-to-the-Celtics rumors, which seemed way too expensive back in June when we thought we were building for the future, have us a little giddier now. ESPN is reporting that the trade talks are starting to swirl around again; the deal would still involve Al Jefferson, Theo Ratliff (who is the Celtics MVP based on how much everyone lusts after his expiring contract), and......

One word sums up the spirit felt within Fenway Park on Tuesday night: confidence. The Red Sox returned home from its West Coast roadtrip exhausted (players, management and sleep-deprived fans alike) and with a 3-4 record. Offense had been shaky. The team continued to hit too many double play balls for comfort. And Tim Wakefield, who had struggled through a tough month-long stretch of starts, was slated to take the mound. And yet it seemed......

Holy smokes! Giant fish on the MTA, Paris Hilton in jail, then out, then in again, Al Gore, goatses, blumpkins, Matt Damon, and baby art critics! It's been a busy week across the Ist-A-Verse, and here's a smattering of what's been going on. In Gothamist's neck of the woods, they found out that many things are possible: A man caught a 40+ pound fish off the Rockaways and took it home on the subway. Graffiti......

David Letterman's warning to Matt Damon when he appeared last night on Late Night. We caught the interview in a channel flip early in the west coast Sox game. Despite the disappointment handed to us in the bottom of the 11th, it's nice to go to sleep and awake to find that the tubes have done their magic and provided you with this video. In this case it's perhaps the lowest quality video we've seen......

Anybody who thought yesterday to charge $1.00 for blood pressure checks at Fenway can probably retire today a happy person. Where to begin? Both starting pitchers - Schilling and Mussina - looked human, and both seemed to get untracked by a half-hour rain delay. Which was bad news for Schill, but good news for the Red Sox, as it meant that the game would ultimately come down to the bullpens. So Yankee Scott Proctor wound......

We know you're Red Sox fans. We know that, much like every home is supposed to have emergency supplies (flashlight, bottled water, etc.) close at hand at all times, every good Red Sox fan should know where the panic button is. Just in case. Don't press them yet; just make sure everyone in the family knows how to get at it if the worst should happen. Yes, it's only one game. And yes, it's only......

Adam at Universal Hub first brought this to our attention, then we heard it on WBZ in the car: it's a brilliant Gil Santos mashup in which he simultaneously announces the opening day games of all four of our local teams. That Zdeko Brady Matsuzaka is a hell of an athlete, leading the league in assists, RBIs, and completion percentage. The Red Sox joined the growing number of MLB teams who've had to cancel games......

This short work week is long on music. The small show battles the bigger venue this week as the students invade the city. When they come back it seems the shows start up with vigor. Lots of 18+ hit the mark – and they've still got summer money in their pockets. What's this mean? Quite possibly there will be a few more sell outs than usual as the concert funds still run high. Fair......

We here at Bostonist have chosen not to do a play-by-play of this past weekend’s Sox series against the Yankees. We’ve decided to take the high road and analyze who the hell we can blame for the awfulness that ensued against New York. While some look to Varitek’s absence as a major reason for losing, we’ve heard others point fingers at a slew of people. Could it be the grounds crew and their lack of......

Eight Days a Week. The music scene is hot, and we realize that we're not giving you enough lead time on some of the best way to cure a case of the Mondays – with a Monday evening show. Several local acts find prominence on......

Before the sky turned dark and it started to rain this afternoon, Bostonist was taking a walk past one of the half dozen Peet’s Coffee & Tea's scattered around Boston. Our friends who visit from the west coast often get excited when discovering any of the chain's few a locations here. We didn’t know it was that big of a deal, but apparently the reach in California is similar to Dunkin Donuts in New England.......

As a sufferer of both allergies and asthma (yes, we are a wreck), Bostonist never realized how bad it can get for us here in New England until we spoke to friends on the West Coast whose allergies disappeared when they left Massachusetts. So we were delighted to hear of the latest report from the Asthma Regional Council, who declared that New England has the highest rate of asthma in the country, with over 400,000......

Admittedly we’re a little low on the Saturday evening picks for this week. Mostly because we know we’ll still be swigging green beer by the pint – or at least too hung-over from Friday night to make it out to a show. Again this week we’ve put a little classical music for those of you that feel a little culture is good for the soul. Monday 3/13: Dilated Peoples and Little Brother Rakaa, Evidence......
