Music Funny, they don't look bloodthirsty. Vampire Weekend's sound could be described as "My First Afro Pop." They merge indie sounds with world music, and the critics are falling in love. The Village Voice called them "goofy"--it was a compliment. MFA, Remis Auditorium, 8:00 pm, $15. Why do we post this since it looks like it is nearly impossible to get tickets? So you can share hot ticket tips in the comments. Keep an......

Punxsutawney Phil has nothing on the Drowned Hogs when it comes to the lengths taken to prognosticate the weather. While Phil lounges on a velvet-lined tree stump and a fleet of top-hatted handlers gently coax him into making his wintry prediction, members of the Drowned Hogs submit themselves to a plunge in the Atlantic Ocean to find out what February in Massachusetts really feels like. (Hint: Wicked cold.) This Saturday, February 2nd marked the......

--BPD News was still down the last time we checked. We feel adrift. But we saw a few entries on Wicked Local … --Police arrested individuals involved in a "cutting party" in Sudbury on Tuesday. Norman Miller of the MetroWest Daily News described the incident as "booze-fueled." The cutting also enters a gray legal area because the cutting may have been consensual. The lawyer said that Sarah Handy, 23, cut Meagan Hauff, 21, both of......

After all the sturm und drang of a recount, Watertown City Councilor Marilyn Devaney has reclaimed her hotly contested seat following a recount. Initially, tallies showed that challenger John Donohue barely beat her. Then came the recount, which was a wild ride documented by the Watertown Wicked Local Blog and H2oTown. Devaney won that, and now the town's local scribes are waiting to find out if Donohue will challenge the initial challenge. Here's Jillian Fennimore......

Bostonist made the trek up to Wilmington on Saturday to check out the latest Derby Dames bout—the Wicked Pissahs versus the Nutcrackers. Boy, was it worth the ride. The Pissahs crushed the Nuts 142 to 41, reasserting their dominance for a packed house after coming from behind to win last year’s season championship in May. A standout Dame on the Pissahs was Krushpuppy, a rookie roller who scored 15 points in one jam—trust us,......

This is Massachusetts, right? But early this morning a 2.5 earthquake hit towns west of Boston, including Littleton and Ayer. Betsy Levinson at Wicked Local spoke with Littleton police dispatch Supervisor Tim Bemis, who described residents' response to the shaking: "It sounded like a plane crash on 495, or a truck had crashed into their home." WCVB reported that this is the second earthquake in the area this month and that a 1.8 quake affected......

This weather is horrendous and until we see the sun come out and don’t have to wear scarves in the month of May, Bostonist will continue to be in full Seasonal Affective Disorder mode. But when we heard about a woman who is kayaking around the 48 lower states in the U.S. and who happens to be in the Boston area this week, Bostonist started feeling sorry for someone besides ourselves. Renata Chlumska, a 32-year-old......

Sorry about the title, we just couldn’t refrain from using a pun in Boston’s English. The show’s been open for just over a week now on its stop in the Hub as part of the 2006 tour. We’ve only heard positive reviews. It actually seems like everyone Bostonist has run into this morning went to see Wicked over the weekend. The snippets of commentary include: "costumes were great", "sets real good", "what’s the deal with......

It will be a busy weekend here in Boston. Many of our colleagues have the day off for Good Friday or are just looking forward to Patriots Day on Monday that has seemingly been renamed to Marathon Monday. Between the these two holidays, which don’t often coincide with each other, is Easter Sunday. Many in Boston will attend mass as usual, others will make one of their two appearances at church (the other being Christmas),......

It is now a week gone by since St. Patrick’s Day and ye olde Evacuation Day gripped the Hub and spilled from every bar with a little bit of Irish in it (or at least a bit of green in the window). At five days since we stood with Solo in hand atop Telegraph Hill watching the parade, Bostonist has become a little nostalgic for last week - already. We thought it appropriate last week to......

First off, we know the headline is misleading. This post is all news about citizen media - we're not going to be bold and try to claim that it actually is citizen journalism. Some say Dan Gillmor is the father of citizen media. Regardless of whether you believe that, he did, in fact, write the book on it. This year he’s a non-resident fellow at the Berkman Center and lectured there earlier this week.......

Governor Romney announced a plan yesterday to hype the business and research assets of Massachusetts to the world, an effort meant to draw more companies, jobs, etc. to our fair Commonwealth. Bostonist can't argue with this, but we think a crucial element is missing: a slogan for Massachusetts. Sure, we have our tourist slogan - "The spirit of Massachusetts is the spirit of America" - but that doesn't really speak to our high-tech nerd cachet,......

We’ve been listening in on some of the crazy crap people have been talking around this city. It seems that most of it has been Red Sox, Red Sox, Red Sox. In between discussions of Papelbon and Papi we’ve heard some outlandish statements that we can only hope our eavesdropping has taken out of context. Two kids in Central Square are watching as a third kid talks to a woman in Haitian Creole. Kid......
