Bite Size News, April 20: Patriots'/Marathon Edition

Salina Kosgei (Kenya) wins the women's Marathon, and Deriba Merga (Ethiopia) wins the men's race. Americans finish third in both divisions. [Boston Herald]

You may have heard that the Zakim Bridge lights are being turned off so the struggling Turnpike Authority (which we thought they were going to get rid of?) can save some money. It seems that creating a beautiful, attractive bridge was so expensive that they can't afford to light it up anymore. It's a bummer, but maybe it'll keep the gas tax down and/or the T in service... nah, who are we kidding? At most it's a gesture to save a department that's being eliminated anyway. The Zakim has been the subject of so many of our Photos of the Day, and it's a shame to lose its aesthetic appeal at night. If the dimming of the bridge bothers you, there's a Facebook group you can join to show your desire to Keep the Zakim Bridge Lights On. There aren't many members yet, but maybe it'll soon grow to MBTA group proportions. Join up to show your support for the lights.

This Bostonist is hardly a photography critic, but he loves the Zakim Bridge and laser beams. Could this be a glimpse of things to come to Charlestown?

PotD newcomer emdurso gives us this neat time-lapse shot of the Zakim Bridge at twilight. This picture fits in nicely with our action theme for this month and we love how the sky and background are totally washed out with white light. Photo Editor's note - So sorry for the spotty PotD coverage this week, this Bostonist has been totally and completely sick with a bad cold. Feeling much better now, and PotD will...

We here at the Redux are starting to get awfully cranky. You see, we are running out of ways to tell folks to keep the faith and stay off the Zakim Bridge. We've invested a lot of time in the act of reassuring Red Sox fans, asking them to refrain from hitting the panic button. You'd think the Red Sox would help us out and do their part to keep people calm. That would be...

The happiest Red Sox fans around have to be the ones who stopped watching baseball around 7:30 last night. They would have seen Game 1 of the doubleheader, a 13-3 Sox rout/Home Run Derby. They would have seen the Yankees' nightmarish loss to the Mets. But most importantly, they would have been spared Game 2, in which Atlanta demolished the Sox 14-0. A wild day all around. Game One was a laugher thanks in part...

--The gang who couldn't shoot straight has struck again, and a five-year-old boy was the victim of their error. A family stopped in Dorchester at Harbor Point and was driving to Malden when someone thought they were suspicious, enemies, wearing the wrong colors, whatever. So they started shooting at the car on I-93 near the Zakim Bridge. These individuals hit the little kid in the backseat. He is now in fair condition at the hospital...

Spring training is just getting underway, but something will happen Saturday for the first time since the Red Sox clinched their first World Series win in 86 years. Saturday night the stars will be in alignment. Or, rather, the Sun, Earth, and the Moon will be in alignment for a total lunar eclipse – which only happens during a full moon.

As if the constant gridlock, brown-outs, and stifling heat weren’t enough, now Bostonians can add “stranded in Chelsea” to their list of complaints. Yesterday afternoon, Massport nixed the exit 26 airport detour in favor of diverting traffic over the Zakim Bridge, through the winding flyaway ramps, and onto the Tobin bridge, ending at exit 27, Beacon Street. This, however, is not the Beacon Street of Brookline and brownstones. This is Beacon Street Chelsea, and...

With each passing day of torrential rains, Bostonist was becoming more and more convinced that God was visiting Her wrath on Massachusetts for the whole gay marriage thing. Then we finally got around to looking at the newspaper and learned that Maine and New Hampshire, along with Massachusetts, had declared states of emergency, and we realized that if this is divine wrath, it was provoked by something else. That said, we sure are tired of the rain. As numerous entries at Universal Hub indicate, we are not alone among Boston bloggers in feeling this way. We're at the point where we don't even care about seeing the sun ever again - we'd be encouraged if we could catch another glimpse of the top of the Zakim Bridge. Even during a moment of comparatively "good" weather on Friday when we snapped the shot below, that sharp-looking piece of architecture was shrouded in fog.

Possibly the only thing Bostonians can agree on is that we're an opinionated bunch of people. And it seems these days like everyone Bostonist knows has a fancy digital camera and a constantly updated Flickr page. Which is why we're glad that the city of Boston is putting together a show of 375 Views of Boston, in celebration of the city's 375th birthday. Now's the time to teach your neighbors where the prettiest (or grittiest) part of this town is. Slides, jpegs, and photos will be accepted through Friday, and the work will be on view all through city hall between May and August. Painting and sculpture is also accepted, for those old-school types. Bostonist is glad we've got the day off. Building a scale model of the Zakim Bridge with spaghetti is harder than it looks.

"The sun is hitting at a more direct angle. It has less of the atmosphere to go through," Simpson said. "It's enough to do its thing - which is melt the snow."

News last week is that the Big Dig was getting closer to completion, albeit a little leaky. The fourth lane will be added to the Zakim Bridge, a new tunnel configuration will be implemented, and the southbound Congress street onramp will be opened. The Rose Kennedy park in the North End will also begin construction as soon as the weather permits.
